Back in Time
For my husband on our 13th wedding anniversary.
It’s been thirteen years
Since we said I do
I look around and breathe
A tired sigh
The house’s a mess
One kid’s undressed
Two more are quiet—that’s never
A good sign
The clock was ticking
But it somehow stopped
One hour before it’s bedtime
Then our time
I look at you
You look at me
I know you’re thinking the same
As me
Could you
Take me back
Back to a place
Where your hand held mine
And my heart began to race
Take me back
Back to a time
When your kiss sunk deep
Sending shivers down my spine
Take me back
We all bow our heads
Around the table
You thank the Lord Almighty
For everything
You say amen
And raise your head
There’s a glint in your blue eyes
I realize
I’m sitting here
Right in that place
The time is now
It’s always been
In just this
Moment of grace
For each other
Is what it takes
To start all over
We take a step forward
Both of us together
A step that will
Take us back
Back to a place
Where your hand held mine
And my heart began to race
Take us back
Back to a time
When your kiss sunk deep
Sending shivers down my spine
We’ve come so far
And we’ll go further
Because we know how to go
Back in time
